Environmental Research and Technology CTE Program
Bayside High School's Environmental Research and Technology Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program, formerly the Science and Math Academy of Research Talent (SMART), trains students to use the scientific method to solve real-world problems. We train students how to think logically - how to take a large problem and break it down into smaller problems that they can solve. Students in the program learn the necessary skills to write independent research papers, which are entered in such math and science competitions as the New York City Science and Engineering Fair and the Greater Metropolitan New York Math Fair.PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe Environmental Research and Technology CTE program is a four-year research program. In the first year, students take a research class in addition to Regents-level math and science classes. Students alternate between math research (for two weeks) and science research (for two weeks). 0 0 0 After the first year, students continue with either math or science research, taking a research class in addition to their math and science class. No matter which version of research students choose, however, they will always be able to work closely with both math and science teachers. PREPARING FOR COLLEGE AND BEYOND We really make our students smarter. With the help of our training, our students have consistently been among the overall top-performing students at Bayside. Alumni from our program and its predecessor (SMART) have graduated from such prestigious universities as Columbia, Cornell, Georgetown, Harvard, M.I.T., Michigan, N.Y.U., Princeton, Stanford, and Yale. Our program alumni have gone on to many different professions, including law, medicine, accounting, and engineering. The thinking, writing, and speaking skills that our students learn will stay with them for the rest of their lives, no matter what they choose to do.The Math Research office is located in room 318A (opposite the Program Office).
